Life in Quarantine

“Every champion was once a contender that refused to give up”

Rocky Balboa

It is a scary time for all of us. No one on this planet right now has experienced anything like this and we simply do not have answers to many of our questions. As student-athletes we must find the positive in this situation and continue growing as people. It is very easy to fall out of our routines and habits that we stick to in normal life. Therefore, effective time management is paramount in a time like this. below are some templates of schedules and goals lists that will serve you greatly.

Daily Schedule
Goal list

I encourage you all to create a daily schedule and to-do list to ensure you have something to work for and achieve each day. Whether it is as simple as completing a homework task, or as difficult as a two hour workout, setting goals for the day will undoubtedly help you stay more focused in a time like this. However, this also becomes a great time for you to unwind from the daily grind and spend time away from your given sport. If you are someone who began feeling burned out from months and months of working your tail off, then this is a great time to get away from your sport and spend time with family. Treat it as some sort of a vacation. Even in this time of unknown and fear, you can still find positives and be grateful. I hope this post has given you some awareness on how to tackle this situation and I would love to hear how some of you are spending your time.

Balancing your life

“The race of life is a marathon, not a sprint”

Tony Robbins

When it comes to creating a healthy balance in your social life, school and sport commitments, the most important thing is to understand your priorities. If your main priority is to get good grades, your focus needs to be on that, if your main priority is to become a better athlete, your focus should be on that. In other words, you need to identify what your priority is and then based on that you fit time for your other needs around that. It is impossible to have time for everything and be successful in every area. Some areas require you to spend more time in them and sacrifice others if you truly want to succeed at your priorities. This is something that has been very evident to me in my experiences at college.

People are not well equipped in selecting their priorities and making sacrifices in other areas of their lives. By understanding this simple concept, you will be far ahead of your peers when it comes to managing your time. Some methods that have helped me include: writing plans for each day, creating practice plans for areas of your life you want to improve in (sport, weight room etc), or surrounding yourself with people who are great in the area that is your priority. By following these steps you will ensure that you’ll be on the right track for improving in the areas to choose to. Do not forget that with these commitments come sacrifices. You need to be prepared to lose valuable time that used to make you happy, however, in the long run things will all pay off. “The race of life is a marathon, not a sprint” – Tony Robbins

Hello Again

“The pain you feel today, will be the strength you feel tomorrow”

Unknown

It’s been a minute since my last post. I hope you are all well. Today I am focusing on the importance of managing being an athlete and a student. Firstly, scheduling classes is a hugely important aspect of being a student-athlete. When scheduling classes make sure to leave time for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You focus so much on revolving your classes around practice, that it becomes very easy to forget that you need time to eat and fuel up. Secondly, staying up to date with homework is also a skill that most most athletes need to develop. It becomes exponentially harder to manage your time as an athlete. Not only do you spend hours training per day, the time when you are free your entire body is in pain and your mind fatigued.

Therefore my biggest recommendation would be to complete any of the smaller homework tasks as soon as class is over (or before lunch if you have morning classes). By checking off these smaller homework tasks, you are alleviating a lot of stress and will allow you to spend more time on the larger tasks. The last piece of (what I would call) “fundamentals” to consider, would be to constantly be checking your portal for any assignments or tests. It is so easy to forget about a task with all that is going on in your day. By setting reminders on your phone or simply checking before bed each night, you will eliminate the risk of not completing a task simply because you did not remember it. I hope these fundamentals will help you in your academics and you performance as an athlete. I will see you guys soon where I will discuss even more tips and share some personal stories.
